Not far from Kyoto Racecourse along the Yodohonmachi shopping street, Sato preserves the unhurried atmosphere of an old-school Showa-era drinking spot. There is no fixed printed menu here; instead, guests naturally settle into the custom of eyeing the array of obanzai dishes lined along the counter and asking the master for the day's recommendations.

Most offerings come as small plates, spanning simmered aubergine, tender braised pork, oden, sashimi, and Pacific saury, depending on what has been prepared for the day. Glass of beer or highball in hand, selecting tempting dishes one by one through easy banter across the counter is central to the establishment's welcoming charm.

The down-to-earth, nostalgic setting makes Sato an easy place to drop in for a solo drink, though diner accounts mention finding the counter packed with a mix of regulars and travelers. The tavern operates in the evening from 17:00 to 22:00, takes Mondays off, and accepts payment in cash only.
